My family started going up to Critter Cove the summer after I graduated high school six years ago. {Has it really been SIX years?! Yikes!}
I haven't been for a couple of years now due to school and work. This year The Dad went up with two of his buddies.
The Dad is very focused when he fishes. He has a very one-track mind. He doesn't call in to home... it's kind of an out-of-sight, out-of-mind thing.
He also tends to think that he is much younger and able-bodied than he is in reality.
The Mom got a call from The Girlfriend of Fishing Bud #1 last Friday. {The Girlfriend is one of our good family friends.} The Girlfriend asked if we had heard from The Dad. {Of course not.}
She then went on to tell The Mom that something happened to the boat engine {something about a valve being sucked up-- something bad} so they were running on the kicker. It works, but they can't really go fish "outside" in the ocean. {They have to stay in the inlets, etc.} They even tried going back into Gold River {a 4-hour trip on the kicker, each way} to try to find parts. Gold River is a tiny little town, so of course they weren't able to find anything. This was all within the the first day of two of their week-long trip... not good.
And... somewhere in the midst of the boat issues, The Dad jumped from the boat onto the dock and hurt his foot/ankle. Bad. He has bad feet and ankles to begin with so it wasn't a good life choice. It was so bad that Fishing Bud #2 gave him serious pain killers.
The real sign that The Dad was in pain: he wasn't getting up to get the fishing rod with a bite on.
Last night The Wife of Fishing Bud #2 called The Mom to give her an update, and to tell her that The Dad requests that we save ice from the ice maker {they have an old ice maker from Starbucks} for when they get home.
It's hard to say what actually happened or what state The Dad or The Boat is in... it's like that game of Telephone and everything may be mixed up.
The Dad and the Fishing Buds are expected home late tonight... we'll see how close the stories we've heard match reality.
