Update: Julep Bare Face Cleansing Oil

I was a little apprehensive about the Bare Face Cleansing Oil from Julep that was part of my September Maven box. I've been using a quasi-oil cleansing "method" to wash my face for awhile now and it's been working for me so I hesitate to use any new/different face products.

But I gave it a go anyway.

I tried the Bare Face Cleansing Oil for about a week and at first I really liked it--it came off nicely and smelled great. Then an itchy area started up near my chin. Super annoying, super uncomfortable.

I'm not sure what exactly in the Bare Face Cleansing Oil I had a reaction to, but the itchiness was enough for me to stop using it and go back to my homemade concoction of oils (mostly olive oil, some castor oil, and a bit of jojoba oil). Once I went back to my oils the itchiness went away. Admittedly a part of me hoped that it wasn't the Bare Face that was causing it... but I couldn't think of anything else!

I just wish my oils smells as nice at the Bare Face Cleansing Oil. I may look into added some scented oils to it.

So far the Bare Face Cleansing Oil is the only thing I'm not thrilled with from my Julep Maven boxes... not counting the lipsticks that were in my Picnic Mystery box. I'm still loving the nail polishes!

Julep October Box

My Julep October box arrived much quicker than my September box! I know there's been concern about Julep switching to DHL for shipping, but I haven't experienced anything bad with it yet. If anything it seems better so far. We'll see how long it lasts...

I decided to stick with my Classic with a Twist box for October. I wasn't too excited for the colors, but I didn't like any of the others enough to switch.

They included a little pack of candy corn this month in celebration of Halloween! I thought it was super cute and sweet. I love little surprises.

The Classic with a Twist box included Anisa, a deep burgundy crème, and Winona, a buff greige crème. The two together remind me of the classic Burberry plaid (like this).I like the Anisa so far, but the Winona is rather... muddy. I haven't tried it on yet. I'm hoping that I'll like it more on my nails that I do on the swatch.

It also included the new Julep Kajal Eye Glider (with carbon black and brown shimmer) and sharpener. I don't wear a ton of eye liner, but it will be nice to have a quality liner for when I do.

Julep has teamed up with another subscription service, Citrus Lane (they send out monthly boxes of fun things for little ones), for a giveaway: 3 months of each! The giveaway is open through October 8th at 11:59PM PST. You can enter here! (FYI, if you use my link to enter I'll get additional entries, too.) I haven't tried Citrus Lane myself since I don't have any little ones, but it would make a great gift!

As always, you can sign up for your own Julep Maven subscription using my referral code here.

Julep September Box

Woohoo! My first "real" Julep Maven box finally arrived! I knew what I was going to get ahead of time, but that doesn't make it any less exciting to see the box waiting for me.

Julep September Box

On the 20th of each month you can see what your box is going to include... then you can choose a different style box, add on up to 3 items, upgrade to the entire collection, or choose to skip that month completely. I chose to keep my Classic with a Twist box and even added on items!

September's collection is called Cityscape.

The Classic with a Twist items:

Julep September Box
Julep September Box
Julep September Box

Florence... a pretty camel creme, Padma... a deep, royal plum creme, and the new Bare Face Cleansing Oil.

My Add-Ons:
Julep September Box
Julep September Box
Julep September Box

Reece... a purple holographic glitter, Daria... a dark slate grey creme, and the Freedom Polymer Top Coat.

Julep September Box

I love all of the colors and I'm excited to use the top coat! I already use oils to clean my face, so I'm hoping that my face will like the Bare Face Cleaning Oil, and that I can transition back to my other oils easily if it's not any better than what I'm currently using (which is a mixture of olive oil, jojoba oil, and castor oil). I'm hesitant to try any new facial products since my oil regimen (if I can even call it that) seems to be working the best of anything I've tried in the past.

I had to play with my new polishes... Padma, Florence, Daria, and Reece:

And then decided to put on Florence... I love how clean and simple the color is! I put on about 3 coats for a solid coverage (the photo above is just one coat of each).

Julep Picnic Mystery Box

I couldn't wait for my actual August Maven box to arrive so I decided to splurge and order the Julep Big Picnic Mystery Box! I also got some of the add-ons, which were great deals.

What I got in my Mystery Box: 7 Julep polishes and the Julep Paris Jazz Lipstick Trio.

My add-ons: Love Letter polish trio, Perfect Weather polish trio, and the Julep make-up bag (I need a place to keep my new collection of nail polish!).

Perfect Weather: Denver, Claire, Gloria

Love Letter: Annette, Chelsea, Catherine*

I love the polishes. There are only a couple that I am not sure if I'll wear--I'm not a huge orange person. Those may end up being gifts or maybe a giveaway. I love the variety of reds and the fun blues and greens. Even some glitter!

I had to test some out:
Untitled

Ring fingers are Helen (from my Classic with a Twist Intro box) with a coat of Vanessa (a clear glitter) over it. The other fingers (and my thumbs) are Joy, which is a similar color to Helen but darker... and an added pink tinge around the edges from cutting beets.

I am not too thrilled with the lipsticks... I don't wear a lot of lipstick and wish the box had a different product instead. I had to test to see how they looked on me so I'd feel weird giving them as a gift now. But they are nice and I love the packaging! Maybe I'll find some excuse to get really dressed up and put them to use.

My Big Picnic Box came out to a value of $126 (retail value, not Maven) and cost $39.99. Not too shabby. Even if I take out the lipstick value, $98 of polishes for $40 is pretty good in my book.

My add-ons were another $35 and I got $102 worth of products (6 polishes and the bag).

That's $75 (before taxes) for $228 worth of products!!

Did you get yourself a Mystery Box? What did you think of it?

*I don't remember which polishes were in the add-ons exactly... I think Joy was actually in the Love Letter add-on, not Annette.

Want to try out a Maven subscription for yourself? Click here to sign up with my referral code and I'll get some Jules (reward points) too! Oh, and this isn't a sponsored post. I'm just loving Julep.

Also... did you know that there are a TON of other monthly box subscriptions out there? From jewelry, to snacks, and even entire meals (if you live in the delivery area--which I don't--so sad), and toys for kids! Or books! And clothes! Jennifer over at Ramblings of a Suburban Mom has a list of the ones she knows about (it's a long list), plus a list of boxes that are free or super cheap to try out, and she does frequent reviews of a lot of different boxes (some she subscribes to, others she gets just to review).

Classic with a Twist

My friend Tiffany recently introduced me to Julep, an awesome nail polish (and more) company based in Seattle. Julep has a subscription service that you can sign up to get 2 nail polishes and another full-sized product once a month for $20. The best part? You can get your first box for only $4, which covers the shipping, with the code FREEBOX.

That's what I did to get my first box. First you go through their style quiz to find your style and then they send you the box that matches that style (or you can pick the box from another style if you don't like what they suggest).

According to their quiz thing my style profile is "Classic with a Twist" which is described as "an iconic beauty with a timeless aesthetic." I'm not so sure about the "iconic beauty" part, but I like the polish colors in the Classic with a Twist line so I decided to stick with it.

The second best part? Their polish is awesome and doesn't have the nastier stuff that other polishes do. Woohoo!

I was super excited to get my box and couldn't wait to try out the colors! The Classic with a Twist intro box comes with two colors: Claudette, a smoky brick red creme (it's kind of like a raspberry tone to me) and Helen, a smoky pastel lavender creme. I painted my toes AND my fingernails that night--normally I'm a plain fingernail girl, but I couldn't resist. I used Claudette on both and LOVE it.

I'll have to redo my fingernails here soon and I think I might try the Helen.

I'm already looking forward to my next (and first non-intro) box! The other awesome thing about Julep is that you can skip months if you want or you can go the other way and add other products to your box at a discounted rate.

I'm thinking I'll keep the subscription for awhile to get a sweet little collection, maybe some extras for gifts, and then we'll see after that. For now, though, it's an awesome way to pamper myself.

If you want in on the action, use this link to use my referral code and I'll get extra points in their rewards program, too!

Disclaimer: Julep doesn't know me. I just want to share the wealth of awesome nail polish and fun box subscriptions! The only thing I get out of this is points in their rewards program if you use my link and referral code to sign up for their Maven (box subscription) program. Woohoo!
