trunk ba-dunk-a-dunk

I have always loved boxes.

Not sure why. Maybe it stems from a desire for everything to have a place.

Whatever the reason, I love them. Large and small, tin boxes and big trunks... they make me happy.

I love the look of antique trunks and suitcases, like these ones I spotted at the Thorp Fruit and Antique Mall:

Or these I found via Pinterest:

I've wanted a trunk/storage bench at the foot of my bed for awhile now. It's been tough finding one that I like that is also sturdy, clean on the inside, and is reasonably priced. I know, I'm asking for a lot.

.

Naturally, I started thinking about how I might make one that meets all of those requirements above. Can't be that hard, right? It's just a box.

But I want it to look like a trunk. I'm thinking... a drawer on the bottom with bands all around the trunk to camouflage the seam, and a regular flip top like a real trunk, but slightly padded for seating. Or maybe without padding if it looks too tacky... seating isn't really necessary (especially if I ever get to do my built-in shelves and window seat like I want to do).

I'm not sure how I would finish it, though... that's the toughest (and I think most vital) part. Natural wood-ish, like some of the ones above? Leather-ish? Or maybe painted?

My bedroom has blue-gray walls now and I plan to re-do my dressers at some point (currently they are a warm, orangey wood tone), but not sure how yet. And I want to replace my wood bed frame with some sort of custom headboard (and no footer).

Any ideas/suggestions??

  1. I'm no expert, but I think painting and using leather straps would be the easiest, most finished way of working it. You wouldn't have to use fancy wood that way either. I don't know if it strikes your fancy, but perhaps you could use a funky bright color for the base of the box to add a character piece to your room. And then neutral colored leather straps. Geez, now I want one ;)

  2. Good idea!! Maybe if I (eventually) make one I can give you some tips and tricks! ;) I like the idea of painting it... especially if I refinish my dressers in a dark stain. If I made a trunk in wood and stain that might be a bit much going on--and I think it needs some funky color in there!
