fence for da bulbs

I have a small "garden" area around my front stoop. There's not much to it... a lavender plant I inherited from the previous homeowner, the bulbs I planted last fall that have somehow survived despite my lack of garden skillz, and a potted hydrangea that was a gift from a friend when I moved in.

Plus weeds, long grass that is still too wet to mow, rocky soil that I haven't mulched, and a makeshift "fence" of cement blocks and an old planter to keep Taylor from trampling my precious flowers.

Not what I would consider aesthetically pleasing.

I decided it needed a mini facelift. Nothing drastic. I picked up 16 feet (2 x 8 feet) of 18" folding rounded fencing from Coast to Coast for about $5.

Thanks to Daylight Savings, I had enough light after work to remove the cement blocks, do a little bit of weeding...

And put in the fence! It's not substantial, but I think it will be enough to keep the pup from walking all over my bulbs... and  it is many times more pleasing to look at!

Yes, much better.

(Can you spy Louie in the photo above?)

And you'll even be able to see the hyacinths and tulips once they come up and bloom... instead of hiding them behind cement blocks. Not bad for $2.50 (since I only used one of the fence pieces) and it will look even better once I do some more weeding and once the rain lets up enough for me to mow!

I can't wait!

I discovered that lots of little slugs like my garden area, too... I have a few "green" techniques to try to get rid of the nasty little critters. I hope it works!

  2. Thanks, Sara! I'm loving it. It makes me smile whenever I look at it... until I notice all the weeds and grass that still need to go. One piece at a time! :)
