treat yourself

I had a wonderful Valentine's.

I watched many men and boys wander Central Market with a lost look in their eyes. They varied in ages... some old, some young, many in between. The youngest went for the single roses--simple and romantic. Men wandered the produce section--probably getting the last few items for the romantic meal they planned to prepare. A few young families were there, too. Some men lined up at the florists--normally I'm the only one admiring the expensive bouquets. Then there were the really lost ones, looking at candy hearts made of chalk, hoping that "Be Mine" and "Text Me" would be enough.

I couldn't help but smile as I gathered the ingredients for my own Valentine's meal that I planned for myself-- chicken, fresh rosemary, beets, and Viking Feast ice cream. Oh, and fresh tortillas to hold me over.

I danced to Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald... in my tea-themed apron while snacking on a fresh tortilla, making Taylor do his obedience skillz dance with me.

I had an amazing dinner... rosemary chicken, beet and crumbled goat cheese salad. I think beets + goat cheese might be one of my new favorite combos. Plus a beer left over from when one of my cousins visited me.

(I smeared butter and fresh rosemary all over a whole chicken, even under the skin. Then baked it forever-and-day covered in foil. It finished cooking without the foil so it would be nice and golden. Beauty. I cut the beets into chunks, drizzled them with olive oil, then tossed them with some herb de Provence, a little salt and pepper, and stuck them in the over until they were soft enough to spear with a fork. I tore up red leaf lettuce, topped it with sliced beets and some crumbled goat cheese and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar. So good.)

I started another batch of homemade chicken stock... I can't wait to make it into yummy soup.

My whole house smelled divine.

It was probably the best Valentine's I've had in quite awhile. I should treat myself with a good meal and dancing more often.
