DIY Kitchen Island, Take II

KitchenIsland-1

I ran out of time to start working on my kitchen island after I bought the lumber so I had to wait until the next day to get started.

I did a lot of cutting and a lot of gluing...

I had intended to make the counter out of 2x4s when I made up the plans in Sketch Up but I ended up getting 2x3s instead with the thought that it would look a bit more like a butcher block by using slightly smaller boards.

My dad helped me lay them out so the grains went in opposite directions in each of the boards. (That way when/if they warp over time the warping in each of the boards should counteract one another.)

Then we glued and screwed each of the boards together, clamping the whole thing down onto the table  to help keep it all nice and (mostly) flat.

We notched the legs and used two of them to protect the counter top as well as to add even more flattening support. (I also just like the look of those clamps...)

We managed to build the drawer housing. By this time I was getting tired and not thinking very well... so my dad helped a ton to get the whole thing square.

During the following week I went to my parents' whenever I could after work to router the edges and sand everything. I finished the counter and I looove it!

I still have to sand more, assemble the miscellaneous pieces, build the drawers... and finally finishing.

So far I am really liking how it is turning out! Hopefully that holds true to the final product...

  4. Thanks Sara!! I think the 2x3's were a great impulse decision! I'm going to be on the hunt for a nice cutting board to use on it during our outings!
