Dare to... deck the halls!

I've been excited for this week's Dare to DIY challenge since the first week!

It means that I get to pull out my Christmas tree (yes, it's a fake), rediscover all of my little rustic ornaments (most of which were purchased at Target last year), and embrace the Christmas season.

I put on some Christmas tunes... Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Dean Martin... and decorated the tree while trying to convince Louie that it's not okay to eat light bulbs. Or fake pine needles. (I wish I was kidding.)

PonderosaXmas-4

Then finally I was able to get in the mind frame to figure out what I wanted to DIY!

The first almost-too-easy quasi-DIY decor I added this year involved pine cones from the Ponderosa pine trees in my yard. I actually collected them last year with great plans to do something with them, but then lost track of time.

PonderosaXmas-5

I didn't do anything to them, just placed them on some of the empty branches of my Christmas tree.

PonderosaXmas-1

I might add some gold to the edges in the future, but for now I like the simplicity.

That was just a warm-up.

My real DIY project took some of this...

YarnWreath-2

and turned it into two of these...

YarnWreath-1

I knew I wanted wreaths to hang in front of my two window-mirrors as soon as I hung them on the wall. They just screamed for something lovely and festive.

Most of my Christmas decorations are rather "rustic" with reds and creams and a bit of gold so I figured the wreaths should be the same.

The yarn is one of the Holiday Homespun yarns from Lion Brand... it's a creamy not-quite-white color with a thread of gold tinsel through it. I wrapped the wreath base in a single layer of yarn (with a dab of hot glue every now and then) and then went back and did another spaced-out layer for a different bit of texture/dimension.

YarnWreath-5

Once my wreath was wrapped (and I loved it) I played around with my decorative goodies (rustic bells, little pinecones, floral berries, floral tin picks, red ribbon with glittery edges-- all from Joann Fabrics) to find the perfect combination and layout.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="I curved the berries to follow the wreath shape"]YarnWreath-7[/caption]

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="I couldn't resist these rustic little bells!"]YarnWreath-8[/caption]

I decided to put the decorations on opposite sides of each of the wreaths...

YarnWreath-11

YarnWreath-10

So when I got them up, they looked like this:

YarnWreath-9

I absolutely LOVE how they turned out! Even better than what I had envisioned... which rarely happens.

(Please ignore the clutter reflected in the mirrors... and my draft-blocking blanket over the side door.)

Here are a few tips I "discovered" if you want to try this for yourself:

  • Hot glue is still HOT even if you are using a "low temp" glue gun.

  • It went a bit faster for me if I wound a bunch of loops around the wreath and then scrunched them over to where I wanted them.

  • YarnWreath-3
  • A smaller portion of yarn is easier to work with than the whole skein... or pre-roll it into an actual yarn ball. (I didn't have the patience to do that.)

  • YarnWreath-4

  • If you use the Homespun yarn, knot either end so it doesn't unravel. (This may also help with other types of yarn.)

  • One layer of yarn works fine if you use a light yarn (cream, white) but if you use a darker yarn (such as red) the white wreath base might show through the little gaps between yarn strands.

It took me about 2 hours to finish the first wreath and then only one hour to finish the second. A bit time consuming, but not as bad as I thought it would be--and definitely worth it!

Did you dare to deck the halls this week? Don't forget to link up over at the NewlyWoodwards for the Dare to DIY party!

  1. Your wreath turned out beautifully! So smart to use the styrofoam wreath...I tried one of the straw ones before and it was a disaster!

  2. Love those wreaths - I've always wanted to make a yarn one but wasn't sure I'd have the patience. I love what you came up with!

  3. I love the pinecones on the tree. I'm a huge fan of pinecones as holiday decor. I'm also adoring your wreath. I like the nobby yarn you used. And, I need the window mirrors. I'm obsessed with yours.

  4. I LOVE it Sarah! Need to come and see your house again someday.
Looking at my old sled, tobaggan (sp) and the giant teddy bear. You have me in the mood to buy some fake snow and put them into the loft in a display for Christmas!

  5. Oh my gosh, they turned out soooo pretty! You have such a creative eye. I can never get placement right on stuff like that, I am much more a "follow-the-directions" kind of girl. They look really, really great and I love them over the mirrors. I love the mirrors, too!

  6. Awesome wreaths. I love how you embellished them, especially the berries.

I made a yarn wreath but it's still plain for now. I had a but more wrapping success by holding the wreath form between my legs and then wrapping- but I also found that doing a few wraps and then positioning the yarn was the way to go.

  7. I love the wreaths! They're so warm and cozy and pretty! And they could not be displayed in a better way. I have to find me some old chippy windows!

  8. you had me at the kitty picture. i think cats love christmas. i know mine do. so many things to play with and discover.

    and that wreath! beautiful!!!!!

  9. I thought about using a straw one--I didn't even think of how awful it would be to use with yarn until you mentioned it! (I just didn't buy it because it was more expensive!)

  10. I was worried I'd get bored halfway through or not want to do a second one, but they weren't nearly as tedious as I thought they would be! You can do it!!

  11. Thanks! I love my mirrors! It took me awhile to decide to buy them, but I'm so glad I did! They really helped me to "finish" that corner of my kitchen.

  12. Thanks, Aunt Kay!! You guys are always welcome to stop by for a visit! :)

  13. Haha thanks! I tend to be a "follow the directions until I don't like what they say... then do it my way anyway" kind of girl. ;) Now you can use these as "directions," though, and make your own!

  14. Oh good idea! I didn't even think of holding it with my legs... that would have been even easier. I was standing while I made mine, which may be part of the reason. Next time I'll try that for sure! (I thought about leaving them plain, too... but clearly I couldn't help but add a few things!)

  15. I think you're right!! This is Louie's first Christmas and he's already discovering lots of new things to play with... which I then find all around the house. (Mostly ornaments from the tree and packing material from recent deliveries.)

  16. Clever idea. I am loving the look. Your cat looks adorable, too!

  17. A very cute and simple idea for a wreath!

  18. Beautiful decorations! Thanks for sharing. I have also tried to convince my cat that it is not ok to eat the tree, or the lights or decorations.. sadly the tree has nothing but lights around the bottom of it now. The decorations were pulled down and broken... live and learn :)

  19. oh i love these - so simple and beautiful.
but also i am stunned by those window/mirrors..
they look awesome, did you make them yourself ??

  20. the wreath is so very festive..i love it! Your cat is soo beautiful,,he reminds me of my cat Hunter..he tries climbing our tree at least once a year haha (:

  21. That's exactly what I was going for! Warm and cozy... my kind of Christmas. :) I hope you can find some awesome old chippy windows!! (I got lucky and found them pre-assembled with mirrors at a local antique store.)

  22. Thanks!! And Louie is adorable... and crazy, too curious, energetic, etc. He's a character! But a lot of fun and at the end of the day, very sweet.

  25. i love how they turned out and those mirrors are awesome. i saw a yarn wreath at churchmouse the other day... definitely something to do for next year. i think i'd like one as a centerpiece on the dining room table. we went on a hike to get stuff to make a wreath... it's drying in the garage. i was thinking of making one for the table, but decided against it because of the potential mess.

congrats on making wordpress' front page. i've been reminded of how much i love your blog. and i might get back into mine soon too :)

  26. Nice wreathes. As for cats and Christmas trees, our two cats are convinced it's a giant cat toy we put out every year for them. Thankfully, the branches bend under their weight so they can't climb it.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I love the window-mirrors to begin with. The wreaths are very festive and fuzzy! I've tried to make a fake greenery wreath (stuff from Joanne's and hobby lobby) and they didn't turn out well. i want to try one with lights, have you ever done that, or anyone else here?

    ReplyDelete
  28. I love all your decorations! :) My kitten was terrified of our Christmas tree the first time she saw it! She stays upstairs and the dogs stay downstairs though so I don't have to worry about her playing with lights or anything.

  29. I can hardly see your comment box. I guess it's my eyes. I love, love your beautiful wreath. Really pretty. We have a prelit, fake tree too. Plus, we have a cat too. My cat's name is Boots. Tell Louie Merry Christmas.

  32. This is such a great idea! I just moved to China a few months ago, and the city in which I live doesn't have that many Christmas decorations. But I could probably modify your idea a bit to decorate my apartment! Thanks! And congrats on being Freshly Pressed!

  35. Your photos were stunning!!!! And so was your wreath. I think that if you did some in green and some in red, it could be pretty awesome too. Make one for each of yoru guests on Christmasm, they then have something to remember you by EVERY christmas.

  36. I loved the picture of the cat by the tree, my cats and Christmas Trees don't go together they use them as climbing frames.

  37. Great wreaths. How long did it take you to complete this wreath. If I did not see it in the photograph, I would have thought that it was done professionally. Then again you are a pro. Just look at the way you rolled the yarn around the circular thingy. Looks like machine made.

  43. These are wonderful ideas! For a minute there, I thought you actually knit a pattern and placed it over a wreath, but I'm pleased to see that even someone like me can complete this task! Thanks for sharing...hope your cat stays away from the wreaths, too! Congrats on FP!

  44. I love the holiday season and reading your post just helps to get me more in the spirit. I hope you'll check out mine as well as my latest entry is a running diary of sorts of a typical Christmas Day in my family growing up. Check it out and I'll be following you as well.

oh, and you take great photos too! congrats!

  49. Adorable! Love the wreath. Your cat is a cutie, too! A cat head in the Christmas tree is a familiar scene in my house.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Love that wreath...looks perfect in the window/mirror!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Those wreaths look fantastic! I do the pine cones thing too, but mine are silver sprayed. I only just got a Christmas tree (real one) so now I have to figure out how I want to deck our halls!

    ReplyDelete
  52. The wreath looks abolutely stunning. I would've never ever had the idea myself to make it out of yarn... you are very talented!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Thanks!! I thought about doing a bit more with them (I didn't use all of the decorative bits I bought) but I liked keeping them simple like this instead... trying to keep to the "less is more" rule. :)

    ReplyDelete
  54. Haha thankfully most of my decorations aren't breakable! Otherwise I would definitely be in trouble. Every morning I find a few more of my little bells around the house. He still likes to chomp on the lights and branches, which I just don't understand. I wouldn't think they'd taste all too great!

    ReplyDelete
  55. I LOVE my window-mirrors! I can't claim credit for making them--I actually found them at a local antique store pre-assembled! They had a great variety of window-mirrors to choose from (and some without the mirrors, too) so it was difficult deciding which ones to get!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Oh my... I hope Louie doesn't think of that. He hasn't tried climbing it yet (this is his first Christmas!) and I just hope it stays that way! It's probably just a matter of time, though...

    ReplyDelete
  57. Thank you! (I'm a geography person and I have to confess that I didn't know where Kuala Lumpur was so I Googled it--it's a beautiful city!)

    ReplyDelete
  58. Thanks!! If you're going to ooze cheer and magic, Christmas time is the time to do it I'd say. Thanks for visiting!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Laura! Thanks!! I think a centerpiece would be a great idea... I should have bought more than just two of the wreath bases! You'll have to share how your wreath turns out... on your blog (;)) or on FB.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Thanks!! I'm pretty sure Louie thinks I put it up just for HIM, too. Although he hasn't tried climbing it yet... I don't think.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Just love those wreaths! Very cute. Congrats on being Freshly Pressed! :D

    ReplyDelete
  62. Thanks!! I've been having a hard time finding fake greenery that doesn't look too... well, FAKE. I got lucky last year and found a centerpiece on clearance that looks decent. I think it's supposed to be Ponderosa pine greens or something. I haven't done anything with lights--yet. :) I read somewhere that it's easier to change out the strand of lights if you zig-zag it across the wreath instead of wrap it around. Good luck!!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Thanks!! Louie doesn't frighten easily... which is good and bad. Even if he does get scared it doesn't last long. He'll be right back to check it out after the initial "flight" instinct. Like the vacuum. Sometimes I have to physically nudge him out of the way!!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Ah you're right... the comment box is kind of faint. I don't think I can change that with this Wordpress theme... I might have to try, though. I love "Boots" for a cat name! Thanks for visiting!!

  68. CHINA?! Awesome! I have a couple of friends that have moved there! I've always wanted to go... it's on my someday-list. I'm sure you'll be able to adapt this project for a more everyday-decor item just perfectly. Good luck! And thanks!

  71. Good idea!! I have some great wine-red yarn that would go perfectly with the yarn I used for these wreaths! I might have some green already, too... I think another trip to the craft store is in my near future. :)

    ReplyDelete
  72. Thanks! I'm just waiting for Louie to figure out that he might be able to climb it... hasn't happened yet (I don't think).

    ReplyDelete
  73. Thanks!! It took me about 2 hours to make the first wreath (figuring out what I wanted to do, etc) and then only about an hour to make the second one.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Thanks!! Louie is a ham for the camera! Thanks for visiting!

    ReplyDelete
  75. Thanks! I'm glad they could give you a nostalgic moment or two. Happy Holidays and thanks for visiting!

    ReplyDelete
  76. Thanks! I hope the little steps I included make sense, along with the "tips" I added. They're really not difficult to make! The hardest part is figuring out and deciding what you want to do!

    ReplyDelete
  77. Thanks! Yeah, they're a little time consuming but it went by pretty fast. I used 12" diameter wreath bases for mine, so it would be even quicker with smaller wreaths. Have fun with it!

    ReplyDelete
  78. Thanks! I love that red ribbon... just enough glitter to make it special. Thanks for visiting!

    ReplyDelete
  79. Oh my goodness I don't think I could knit something like that! I would need to practice my knitting skills quite a bit more! So far my cat hasn't figured out how to get up to the wreaths... and hopefully it stays that way!

    ReplyDelete
  82. Thanks! You can DEFINITELY do this! And the great thing is that once you get the "base" done you can add anything you want to make it your own!

  84. Thanks! Every now and then (ok, quite frequently) I get in the mood for "projects" and then things like these wreaths happen. I'm glad you enjoy them!

    ReplyDelete
  85. Thanks!! Every time Louie goes "missing" sure enough I find him under the tree. (It probably doesn't hurt that I use a cozy blanket as my tree skirt.)

    ReplyDelete
  86. Thanks!! It's going to be hard to take them down after the holidays... I love looking at them each day!

    ReplyDelete
  87. Thanks! I thought about adding some silver or gold to the pine cones, but for now I like them plain. I have some leftovers I might do something like that with, though.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Thanks!! I had seen similar wreaths done in twine and other types of "string" but this yarn was perfect for what I had envisioned.
